Rosacea / Facial Redness

Rosacea is a disease characterised by facial flushing, sometimes associated with a burning or stinging sensation. This tends to affect the cheeks, forehead chin and nose although other areas may also be affected.

Rosacea is actually a relatively common condition but is surrounded by various misconceptions. It can be uncomfortable for patients as it can be itchy, as well as burn during extreme temperature changes such as moving from a warm interior to the cold outside. Pustules and breakouts are very common alongside rosacea and some individuals may also develop more inflammatory features mimicking acne and some may develop swelling of various parts of the face due to excessive growth of the glands and fibrous tissues.

FAQ

Firstly, we need to ensure you have the correct diagnosis, as facial redness and flushing can be caused by multiple other conditions.

Research identifies the primary issue in Rosacea as blood vessel instability, facial flushing being the cardinal sign. This must be addressed if Rosacea is to be treated properly – topical and oral antibiotics have no role here.

Trigger factors vary significantly amongst patients. For example, sun exposure, certain alcohols or spicy foods are common trigger factors for many, but some patients experience no change in their symptoms whatsoever when exposed to these factors. It is important to keep a mental diary to help identify triggers, then try to avoid them if possible.

Please do not stop anything prescribed by your GP but do bring all your medicines with you to your consultation or at least a photograph of the packaging.

It would be useful if you bring your skin products too as many patients with rosacea have very sensitive skin, and will often not tolerate a vast array of topical agents.

Some treatments may not be possible if you are on certain medication but our doctors will advise on the best course of action and can write to your GP if necessary.

No two patients are the same. The most effective mode of treatment will depend on whether you suffer from redness and flushing alone, inflammatory lesions or some of the more severe changes. Dr Patel will decide the most appropriate and individualised treatment regime for you.
