After a peel you may notice that your skin is flushed, pink or red (almost like you have caught the sun that day) and your skin may also feel dry or tight. At or around day 3 post treatment you may experience some slight peeling or flaking. This is to be expected and will last 1 – 2 days. It is possible that you may have no peeling or flaking. If there is no peeling or flaking this does not mean that the peel is not working. Our chemical peels are designed to remodel from within with as little downtime and surface trauma as possible. The chance of any side effects happening and how obvious they are all depends on the type of peel you have had. The more high strength peels often show these side effects for a longer period of time as a stronger acid will have been used.

To get you the best results from your peel and to help treat the side effects, you may be advised to use skin preparation products prior to you treatment and you will also receive recommendations of aftercare products and a treatment regime. All of these will be different depending on what peel you have had and your skin type.

It is important to wear SPF everyday post-procedure for at least 2 weeks and avoid products containing Retinol, Glycolic acid or any other exfoliating ingredients for the first week post-procedure.

After most chemical peels you should be ok to apply your usual makeup the following day unless advised otherwise.

Avoid physical activity until the following day.

Avoid heat treatments e.g. hot baths or showers, sauna and steam rooms for 24 hours post treatment.

What do chemical peels do?

Chemical peels resurface the skin by the application of various forms of acid to the skin to remove dead skin cells and stimulate the growth of new cells. As a result, chemical peels promote the growth of a new healthy top layer of skin and over time improve skin problems like hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, uneven texture and skin impurities.

What should I expect during a chemical peel?

Treatments will vary dependent on the type of peel chosen and the depth of the peel. The skin is first prepped and then the selected peel is applied and left on the skin typically from 3-10 minutes depending on patient comfort. It is normal to feel a mild tingling and heat sensation, this will normally subside after a few minutes. Some peels are self neutralizing so will be left on the skin after leaving the clinic to safely neutralize on their own in time.

How long is the downtime after a peel? Can I go straight back to work?

Downtime after a peel can vary from being very minimal to up to a couple of weeks depending on the depth of the peel. Our AlumierMD peels are all superficial to medium depth but specifically designed to cause as little trauma to the skin as possible for very minimal downtime but maximum results!

Downtime can involve, tingling and warm sensation immediately after treatment. Mild peeling and flaking of the skin can occur 3-4 days following treatment and last up to 7 days, this must not be exfoliated or picked as it could scar.

The use of a physical SPF is mandatory after treatment to prevent post inflammatory hyper pigmentation post chemical peel. This MUST be applied every morning for a minimum of 2 weeks- (dependent on skin type and depth of treatment).

Why did I not have any visible peeling after my peel?

The results of a peel should not be judged on how much visible peeling occurs post treatment, but by the end result that the peel produces. This can sometimes take up to 2-3 weeks after a treatment to fully see.

The amount of peeling is variant on the individual, skin condition and type, and the peel carried out. Regardless of the amount of peeling skin, the skin is still being exfoliated at an accelerated rate resulting in the production of skin cells being sped up and the improvement of various skin conditions.
