Our bodies are mostly water and thus the skin has its own water content.

If skin cells are well hydrated they are able to repair the daily damage skin sustains, much easier. Winter brings with it two insults against the skin: the cold and central heating. Both of these factors contribute to dry skin and whilst this will be of no surprise to sufferers of conditions such as psoriasis or eczema, no-one’s skin is impermeable to these aggressors.

  • Time to use a deeply moisturising serum or cream. Apply at least twice daily and especially, after your shower or bath. The type of ingredients really does matter; visit our cosmeceuticals page for more information
  • Turn your heating down by 1-2 degrees
  • Wrap up appropriately when heading into the cold outdoors
  • Avoid very hot showers or baths. Turn down the temperature to avoid irritating the skin further
  • Pat dry rather than rub dry after showering
  • Rub cream into skin in one direction to mechanical irritation.
  • Rub cream in direction of hair growth to avoid folliculitis (infection of hair follicles due to clogging with oily creams)
  • Avoid direct contact on skin with wool. Cotton and silk are kinder to the skin.
