Smoker’s Lines

moker’s Lines are not exclusive to smokers but are more common in smokers due to the expression required to smoke a cigarette i.e. pouting. Smoker’s lines, also known as lipstick lines, lip wrinkles or lip lines are those fine vertical lines that appear around the mouth and lips. The nicer term is “Kiss Lines”. These lines are above the upper lip and add years to one’s appearance. Static kiss lines (lines which appear without the need to pout) are best treated with dermal filler. But good results can be seen with skin peels, radio-frequency skin tightening and skin resurfacing with SkinPen™. Dr Patel will advise on your best option of management after a facial assessment and devise a personalised treatment plan.

What are Smoker’s Lines?

Smoker’s lines, also known as lipstick lines or lip lines are those fine vertical lines that appear around the mouth and lips. These lines are a common concern for many as they become more visible with time. They arise from a combination of factors including the repetitive motion of puckering the lips, the act of smoking and the natural ageing process. As we age our skin loses its elasticity and firmness making these vertical lines more prominent. While the name suggests a link to smoking, these lines can affect anyone, regardless of smoking habits.

Best Treatment For Smokers Lines UK

You can reduce smoker lines by increasing natural collagen and elastin with microneedling, or get rid of smokers lines using filler, or help to smooth skin by using Botulin Toxin.

Causes of Smoker’s Lines

Smoker’s lines are caused by a combination of intrinsic and extrinsic factors. The natural ageing process leads to a decline in collagen and elastin production resulting in thinner and less elastic skin that is more prone to wrinkle formation. Repetitive facial expressions such as puckering the lips can also contribute to the formation of smokers lines. Smoking and sun exposure can accelerate the breakdown of collagen and elastin leading to fine lines and wrinkles. Over time these factors combine to form those annoying vertical lines around the mouth.

Prevention and Treatment

Preventing smokers lines requires a multi-faceted approach that includes lifestyle changes, a consistent skincare routine and professional treatments.

Lifestyle Changes

Quitting smoking and avoiding repetitive facial expressions can prevent smokers lines. A healthy lifestyle including a balanced diet and regular exercise can also improve skin health and reduce fine lines. By making these changes you can slow down the formation of new lines and keep your skin looking younger for longer.

Skincare Routine

A consistent skincare routine can improve skin elasticity and reduce fine lines. Using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 can protect the skin from sun damage while moisturising regularly can keep the skin hydrated and plump. Incorporating products that boost collagen production can also help to maintain the skin’s firmness and reduce the visibility of vertical lines.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers such as hyaluronic acid can be used to fill in smokers lines and restore lost volume to the lips. These fillers are administered by a highly trained medical professional and can give a natural looking result. Hyaluronic acid is a more effective method for treating smokers lines than invasive surgery and has an excellent safety record. Minor risks associated with the procedure include infection, allergy, asymmetry, bruising, suboptimal result, and vascular occlusion. By choosing dermal fillers you can get smoother more youthful-looking skin without the need for extended downtime.

These upper lip lines add years to one’s appearance. Static kiss lines (lines which appear without the need to pout) are best treated with dermal fillers. Hyaluronic acid-based fillers can add volume to deep set lines instantly, stimulate natural collagen production and results last 9-18 months. However, some great results can be seen with other non-surgical treatments such as:

  1. Chemical peels: These remove the outer layer of old skin revealing smoother, younger looking skin beneath.
  2. Radio-frequency skin tightening: This technology uses energy waves to heat the deep layer of your skin, stimulating collagen production.
  3. Skin resurfacing treatment with SkinPen™: This microneedling technique creates tiny punctures in the skin to stimulate collagen and elastin production.

FAQ

Dermal fillers are excellent for superficial to deep lines and volume loss; the results are instant and truly impressive. One treatment can take many years off your appearance. You can also add subtle shape and volume to your lips using fillers. More advanced assessment and techniques can also allow for nose and chin correction and other adjustments to facial structure and features. There are many different fillers on the market, but Dr Patel uses only NON-permanent fillers and only the most reputable and trusted brands e.g. Radiesse Plus®. Treatments are generally quite comfortable and very well tolerated by Patients.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring substance found in the body that helps to hydrate and add volume to your skin. Natural hyaluronic acid is broken down by the body in one or two days so is constantly replaced—as we age this replacement mechanism diminishes so the moisturising and plumping effects of hyaluronic acid decrease. Hyaluronic acid is used for aesthetic treatments but is also used by doctors for injection into arthritic joints to aid movement, as well as eye surgery.

Yes, the aesthetic results are immediate. You’ll see the results as soon as your appointment is over. However, please note that with volume replacement, the final result takes up to 6 weeks to develop. With some of the more advanced fillers, collagen production will also be stimulated; thus your new natural collagen will be around long after the filler has been broken down.

Chemical peels resurface the skin through the application of various forms of acid to the skin to remove dead skin cells and stimulate the growth of new cells. As a result, chemical peels promote the growth of a new healthy top layer of skin and over time improve skin problems like hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, uneven texture and skin impurities.

Treatments will vary depending on the type of peel chosen and the depth of the peel. The skin is first prepped and then the selected peel is applied and left on the skin typically from 3-10 minutes depending on patient comfort. It is normal to feel a mild tingling and heat sensation, this will normally subside after a few minutes. Some peels are self-neutralizing so will be left on the skin after leaving the clinic to safely neutralize on their own in time.

Unlike traditional ablative laser resurfacing, which burns the outer layer of skin, this new generation of treatment does minimal damage to the outer skin layer and thus minimises redness and downtime. The ablative element of the laser happens at a deep-skin layer and uses heat to stimulate collagen production. This triggers the body’s natural healing process to stimulate the growth of new healthy skin tissue.
